The Solomon brothers business started in 1969, when David and Irving put together the 1st hand stitched bag in the storeroom behind their late mother's shoe store in Boston House. They put it on display and sold it immediately. This system simply multiplied, with 2 bags being made and sold, then 4 and so on…
Initially the bags were all handmade, but when orders started coming in from other shops, a more sophisticated production line became necessary. This carried on for many years until such time as they moved into property and became investors with valuable commercial and industrial sites in Cape Town's CBD and periphery.
Since then the Solomon brothers have progressed from these commercial and industrial properties and diversified into the redevelopment of commercial sites, construction of multi-storey residential complexes as well as developing and managing one of the country's most sought after properties, the Camps Bay Promenade.
The first major commercial development, the Pinnacle in Strand Street, was a huge success followed by renovations of Fleetway House and Harbour Place, both situated on the Foreshore. This simply stirred the brothers on and further successful developments were quickly on the way, namely Rodene Studios and Old Town Square.
Eventually the Solomon Brothers saw a gap in the residential market and developed the Kingsbury Hotel into 16 luxury apartments and later progressed to converting old commercial and industrial sites into affordable apartments. With the continual boom in the residential market construction began in 2006 on a 17 storey building in the Cape Town CBD, Four Seasons. This property featured magnificent views of both Table Mountain and the harbour. These views coupled with affordable prices meant the development was quickly sold out of its 193 apartments.
With the huge success of Four Seasons, the decision was made to build a 5 star residential development, Pepper Club. Pepper Club, touted as the hottest address in Cape Town, will forge a unique investment opportunity together with a burgeoning new lifestyle trend in the CBD. This development, due for completion in October 2009, offers private as well as corporate investors a chance to be part of Cape Town's trendy, cosmopolitan environment.
However, the flagship of the Solomon Brothers property portfolio is undoubtedly The Promenade, which is situated in Camps Bay, with 180° views of the beach. This is where the Solomon Brothers have decided to house their offices, from which all the management of their properties is conducted.
The Solomon's have 2 further developments in the pipeline, Ocean Club in Green Point and South Beach in Salt River. The Solomon's remain convinced of the future success of the property industry in Cape Town.
